July 26 2004: In response to an explosion of violence in the Darfur region, the European Union advocated on this day that the United Nations institute economic sanctions against The Sudan until its civil unrest is brought under control. Early in 2003 rural groups claiming that they had been discriminated against took up arms in protest of government neglect of Darfur. Government militias responded harshly, launching a brutal campaign across the countryside. Widespread atrocities that some labeled genocide and ethnic cleansing resulted in a humanitarian crisis by the middle of 2004. 1965: The Republic of Maldives gained its independence from Britain. 1953: Fidel Castro attacked the Moncada military fortress in Santiago de Cuba in hopes of sparking an uprising. Although it was unsuccessful, it inspired the 26th of July Movement, which culminated in the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista's regime in Cuba. 1788 : Sydney, Australia, was settled by British colonists, starting a long era of clashes with the Aboriginals. 1775 : The U.S. Postal Service was established by the Second Continental Congress of the United States, and Benjamin Franklin was named the first postmaster general.
