"Unlike Vietnam, there are no powerful forces in support of insurgents."

This is true, but we don't have 500,000 troops there either. The country was already a storehouse of arms and explosives, thanks to Saddam. Jihaddis from all over the world are streaming into Iraq. I'd say woldwide radical Islam constituted a powerful force. Sunni Saudi Arabia constitutes a deep source of cash. The lesson of Vietnam was that a people that won't be defeated, can't be defeated. The Sunnis in Iraq see no upside to capitulation.
