An arthritis treatment that just sucks

Unemployed medicinal leeches will be called back to work by the thousands if a new arthritis treatment pioneered in Germany latches on. I mentioned in a prior newsletter that these worthy creatures would soon be detached from their current positions in the plastic surgery field if doctors successfully develop a mechanical device that sucks venous congestion out of reparative skin flaps. Now, however, researchers at the University of Essen have applied hungry leeches to arthritic knees, and both humans and annelids are bursting with the good news.

Four to six leeches bellied up to each degenerating knee joint. The hard-working little therapists were allowed to "feed to satiation." Once filled to the brim, they spontaneously fell off and were not reused. "To leech his own," study authors noted.

"Overwhelming and rapid pain reduction" began within 24 hours of the feeding frenzy and persisted through the three month follow-up period after just one single treatment. Doctors theorize that the benefits of this approach derive from compounds in the leech saliva that dilate blood vessels and decrease inflammation. One satisfied patient commented, "We really kneed those little suckers!"
