I think that's the main issue. There are not many problems and objections to the EU which couldn't be fixed by removing Turkey from the picture.

Admit the problem is hopeless.

Without Turkey and growing countries Europe faces an insurmountable demographic deflationary problem.

With Turkey there is no reasonable way to balance interest rates between say Turkey and Italy and Germany. (the younger growing countries and "old Europe")

Then we have the UK that is half in - Half out, adding to the confusion.
