Hank,

Sorry I couldn't post sooner.

Your desire to privatize has a lot of merit but unfortunately produces its own unique set of problems. In the real world we are probably going to have the FDA for better or for worse. Any real hope for change will have to come from within the Agency. I was wondering if it would make any sense to spin off some of the testing or other preliminary functions to the NIH or some other similar groups?

How is specificity affected if a drug is already being marketed and then a new use is found for it? Does it have to go thru the entire testing process again for the new use?

Drug companies would be stupid to knowingly market an unsafe product or even one that was borderline but cccassionally it does happen. The tobacco industry although not the same as we were discussing, was successful in hiding the dangers of smoking for years and vehemently denied any problems. In today's business atmosphere the bottom line is the priority and some companies are prone to do what they can to produce profits.
