Are we so removed from accepting the abstract concepts of good and evil that we don't accept that chief 9-11 hijacker Mohammed Atta was driven by evil?

Nobody is "driven by evil" per se; there is always some goal. Usually it takes some kind of vision of utopia to drive the immediate killing of thousands or millions of people: see Nazism, Communism. The restoration of the caliphate is such a goal. I remember someone in the Chronicles of Narnia that CS Lewis had a line, "like most evil people, she was very practical".
