ManyMoose, I have found that puffing madly on a lit cigarette keeps many bugs away, especially wasps and bees and yellowjackets. Those are about the only occasions when my militantly nonsmoking friends appreciate having me around and blowing smoke.

I do not react to ALL bugs as I do to waterbugs and cockroaches. Some bugs I find utterly fascinating and can, with rapt attention, watch them for hours. What's more, I think snakes are beautiful but wisely keep my distance from the known poisonous varieties. - Holly
