Hanging one's hopes on population growth is a ponzi scheme. It does work, until the whole shebang implodes. The Japanese, Europeans, & Chinese are out in front wrt to dealing with a steady-state non-ponzi scheme. I'm not claiming it will be easy, but I suspect it will not prove nearly as difficult as many imagine.

First of all, there is no reason not to be productive later in life, especially for domestic reasons like assisting with grandkids as well as assisting other elderly people. Continued productivity growth helps enormously as well. The issue is much more the quality of life retires expect. We can't afford to make 100 year olds look & feel 50 until they drop dead.
