The most common position put forward is that democratic free-market economies are superior economically compared to nondemocratic and more centrally planned economies. Your post would seem to shift the metric away from economics and more to perhaps quality of life, such as freedom??

China in the last couple of decades is the poster counter-example to the above claim. However, asia in general showed remarkable growth under nondemocratic, as well as more centrally planned methods than we in the west tend to favor. The eastern europeans on the other hand did nowhere near as well. The reasons are largely cultural I suspect. It will make for a very interesting read if someone with insight and clarity writes a good book on the subject 20 years from now when we can see how it played out.
