Wilkins Confronts Old Trade Issues -- July 20, 2005

U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins has been here less than a month, but he is confronting issues decades-old. According to South Carolina newspaper The State, July 18 marked the beginning of three days of bilateral negations over softwood lumber, the single longest-running issue of contention between the two nations. According to Mr. Wilkins, his confirmation by the U.S. senate was timed to coincide with the discussion of the disputes over softwood lumber and over the U.S. ban on Canadian cattle. "I was nominated, and a month later I was confirmed by the Senate, which is incredibly quick. The whole purpose was to get me there by the end of June for a number of events and a lot of important issues on the table," he said.
