Actually, it is firmly rooted in science. Think about the scientific method. Form a hypothesis and then test it. If you can't figure out a way to test it, then what can your conclusion be? It can only be that you have no evidence to prove or disprove the hypothesis. If you put this in the context of the hypothesis that God does not exist, then your conclusion has to be that you can't prove or disprove it. Therefore, you can claim to be an agnostic.

Atheists on the other hand profess that there is no God. That implies that they have proof there is no God, when we all know that no such proof exists.

So who do you think is more scientific in their thinking, the atheist or the agnostic? It's the agnostic, clearly.
