Sonki,

<<WOW ! i was pleased to see it touch over 140.. making progress.>>
MSFT tends to rise when the techs rise ... it also tends to rise when the large caps rise ... and it tends to buck downtrends in either. Of course, it can sometimes get ahead of itself and need to mark time for awhile, as with any stock. But it is hard to categorize it.

<<... (of course, a little side affair w. sunw once in a while) ... [but] definitely married to wintel ...>>
Hmmm - Sonki, I think it is time for you to review your Wintel marriage vows.

Regarding cancelling a long-running request under Windows:
There is no standard rule - it really differs depending upon the application and/or OS function. To work properly, the code must provide for a cancellation at particular points, to ensure a clean recovery to a well-defined prior state from which execution can continue. The escape key (and sometimes other keys) and various buttons are honored in some cases, but not in others. Sometimes the application posts a window with the option to cancel (or sometimes posted only when a process is taking a long time to complete). As the applications and the OS mature, more of such cancellation points are implemented - as with any incremental improvement.

Best regards,
Arno
