Do the math. If you typically get 25 mpg and then you switch to a plug in hybrid that gets 100 mpg, then you will get 75 more mile to the gallon. If you drive 12,000 miles in a year, how many gallons of gas will you save by driving the plug in hybrid?

Answer = 12,000 / (100-25) = 160 gallons saved per year.

If gas costs, $2.40 per gallon, then you save $384 (160 X $2.40).

If a plug in hybrid costs $3K more than a comparable car, then your breakeven is in 7.8 years.
