The problem once again may be that engineering 101 common sense gave way to PC.

Shuttle Foam Loss Linked to EPA Regs

As recently as last month, NASA had been warned that foam insulation on the space shuttle's external fuel tank could sheer off as it did in the 2003 Columbia disaster - a problem that has plagued space shuttle flights since NASA switched to a non-Freon-based type of foam insulation to comply with Clinton administration Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

I do not see they rushed it. They made an error of assessment. But the stupidity was remaining on the EPA PC path. I still see lots of value in the basic R&D of creating a safe enviromment for humans in such a hostile place as space.

I also believe one or two decades is still required before man interfaced machines can fully replace a human.

To sit on the explosive energy needed to get humans in space one will live in danger. One can say the same for riding in a car, a train or a plain. But for real evil greed, it's those guys who make bath tubs. The potential energy of a human head a few feet up and slip and thwock. God did not design human heads to withstand such violent decelerations.
