I think that alot of wrong has been done by Bush, Rumsfeld and the other folks who bungled Iraq and let things like Abu Graib happen. I also think they were wrong in trying to "sell" us this war with WMD instead of just leveling with us on their greater strategic aims. And I believe, as you do, that they will pay that karmic debt.

However, I also believe that enormous good has been done. One of the world's worst dictators was removed from power. An entire nation of Muslims are now free to chart their own course in complete freedom. They have many obstacles in front of them, but the probability is high that they will overcome them, with our help. The bad that has come from this war will melt away in the next few years. The good that can and most probably will come from this war will last generations.

So when weighted on the karmic scales and when weighed on the scales of historical justice, I think Americans will be looked on as having done something enduringly good.

To close with a metaphor that no doubt you will find offensive, Iraq is like a bad child. They hate you for punishing them and they hate you as you try to build up the discipline and character within them so they can succeed. But when they are older and they look back on their youth, they will come to realize that without your firm hand, they would have been in a much worse place throughout their adult lives. So too it is with Iraq. Some of them may not like us very much now (although a good many of them still want us there), but in 5-10 years when they are reaping the fruits of freedom and Democracy, they will begin to thank us in their hearts, even if they never do it publicly due to pressure from all the Arabs living around them who still despise us.
