Well, I predicted long ago on this thread that the year 2006 would be the first year that made logical sense for us to begin a troop drawdown. Then recently, the press has been getting all these leaks, which I really don't believe are accidental.

I think it is obvious that the White House wants to bring the troops home as soon as possible. No sane American would want to stay in Iraq or any country for that matter as an occupier for a protracted length of time. Our mission was clear. Stay as long as it takes to install a constitutionally elected gov't and then drawdown our troops. The timeline calls for a constitution by August and an election by Dec. Ergo, the earliest we should start the drawdown is in 2006, assuming the Iraqis have enough of their own troop and police strength to start taking over.

So no one has to tell me it's almost over. All the signs are pointing to it, for anyone thinking clear enough to see them. It doesn't mean everyone is coming home, but it does mean an end to the large scale occupation.
