I generally do total getaways ... no phones, no mail, no internet ... It harkens back to the times I went to Cuba so frequently (1998-2001). You would think you were on another planet when you were in Cuba. No news. No nothing.

I pay the bills, lock the house, and hit the airport. It's the only way I know to get myself out of the daily grind and trappings of the US. I need to do that even more now that this country has become so fascist and wears on me so heavily.

I had to take a class this summer to renew my State teaching certificates. It got me into a routine throughout June and July. It met four times a week for eight weeks. I had to do that to get the 5 credits I needed. The class finished last night. So now I have 4 weeks before school starts again and the rat race of seeing 30 or 40 students a week resumes. I need a mental breather and getaway very badly. I'm now physically up for it since my doctor thinks my cancer is gone--i.e. the chances of it recurring are equal to the chances of it hitting the average person my age.

The parts of Mexico we're visiting--Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, and Puerto Escondido--are places I've wanted to go to for quite some time. Hopefully, we'll get to visit Oaxaca, at least briefly, on the return trip from Puerto Escondido to Mexico City. My wife and I spent a week in Oaxaca last fall. It was one of the most delightful places I'd ever stayed. The restaurants there are absolutely spectacular. I hear the oceanfront restaurants of Puerto Escondido are one of the best kept secrets of the Western Hemisphere.
