Sorry, I disagree. The people you refer to as "Saudi funded insurgents" are a bunch that can not be allowed to run (or help run) a country ever again. It may be that the Sunnis of Iraq are allowing Islamic Extremists to fight and die for them, but al Qaeda has in mind something very different than what the Sunnis of Iraq probably want.
Sorry, I believe that women should be allowed medical care and education. I believe that people should be allowed to practice their own religion (or lack there of). I believe that homosexuals should be allowed to walk the streets without the fear of being beaten or killed. I believe that women shouldn't be raped or killed for talking to a man.
Do you think that if the United States left Iraq, that al Qaeda will be content in just fighting the Shia of Iraq? The answer is NO! Al Qaeda is already at war with just about everyone. In 2001, the Taliban and al Qaeda did not control all of Afghanistan - yet they sent teams to start guerilla (civil) wars in neighboring countries, were training and setting up sleeper cells for Western Countries and planning to attack the United States on 9-11, all while fighting to take control of the entire country.
Al Qaeda are at war with everyone...They're killing Moslems in countries predominantly Islamic, like Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Saudi Arabia... and at war with those governments.
They're at war with the United States (no official religion). At war with Britain - Protestant. Attacked Spain and are now threatening Italy - Catholic. Killing in the Arab Republic of Egypt - mostly Moslems. Responsible for killing hundreds in Africa. Fighting and killing people in India - mostly Hindu. They've destroyed ancient Buddhas in Afghanistan and are killing Buddhists in Thailand (95% Buddhist).
There is not a system of government that they are not fighting - monarchy, republic, dictatorship, democracy. There is not a Religion that they are not attacking - Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Sunni (if not as extreme as themselves) or Shiite. There is no political party or philosophy they aren't willing to attack - Democrat, Republican, Labor, Socialist, Communist... There is no race or ethnicity that they aren't willing to kill - black, white, Semite (arab or jew), asian/Pacific Islander, East Indian, North African, East African, West African. There is no social or economic class that they aren't willing to kill - worker, manager, President, peasant. There is no type of employment that these people will not target for death - a film maker, fire or police, Red Cross worker, Doctor, nurse, teacher, diplomat, the unemployed. There is no age or sex that they won't kill - children, old, male or female. It doesn't matter if a person is in a synagogue, or a mosque, an office building, a government building, a car, or a bus, train or plane.
Frankly you've spent a lot of time writing about an Islamic equivalent of the Reformation. Well, the Sunni and Shia have been fighting for over a thousand years, they've had their religious wars and it appears came to an understanding. al Qaeda would like to change that. And the crucible of the Reformation was Switzerland. As far as I know, the Italian region of Switzerland is not a "statelet" of Italy, the French region of Switzerland is not a "statelet" of France, and I don't believe that the German speaking regions of Switzerland consider themselves to be a "statelet" of Germany. |
