The data here is confusing. Reports vary on the number of engineers coming thru Chinese schools by as much as 80%. Generally all reports show a higher gross number than India, but show India a close second (the US is 3rd).

One source I saw had China with 490k engineers/year and India at 400k. By contrast we were at 60k.

Another confusing item is the estimates on 'middle class'. With India way ahead on that front, but behind on overall GDP - there must be some really really rich Chinese (Or really squirly data :-)
