I've seen numbers before for Chinese engineers & scientists in the high 600K range, or almost 10x the US, which for a population ratio of only about 4:1 is high. I have read that a much higher fraction of Chinese college & grad school students are in engineering & science compared to the US though, so that somewhat evens things out. I don't imagine there are many MBA's coming out of Chinese schools.

There are some interesting numbers on something called purchasing power parity with China at 7.26T and India at 3.31T for 2004 (est) vs. 11.75T for the USA. From CIA fact book updated 2005.

So yes, this would seem to argue that either there is much greater wealth concentration in China, or the relative sizes of the middle classes are not so stacked in India's favor. Good data seems to always be in short supply.
