You're getting some good information, I suspect. Different perspectives on the Cuban situation are as varied as the people who have them.

Castro doesn't take advantage of the intellectual abilities of the people. I'll give you another good one. The country has cattle grazing all over the island, but they import all of their shoes. A close relative of mine, the president of International Shoe Corporation, asked me to get in contact with a government official regarding the possibility of building a plant there. I sought the help of a bilingual woman, former executive secretary at Bayer Aspirin in Havana. We spent the entire summer of 1998 trying to track down the appropriate governmental official. We never made contact. She said it was a hopeless adventure.
