Algiers, Vietnam, South Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan (for the Soviets), the fall of the British empire, one big reoccuring theme. That western imperialism can no longer be imposed on any third world country for long. And that when you occupy one of those countries you become a target and recruiting tool for nationalistic and religious insurgencies, some using terrorist methods.

One can only win in this situations when the people truly want you to come and save them. But then you can't hang around for very long. Especially if they're a different race and religion.

Bushies are beginning to realize Iraq is a lost cause and are trying to spin their way out. The new spin is that it's not a "war" anymore but a "struggle against violent extremist". You can't lose a struggle, but you can lose a war. Get it? Bushies don't want to be seen as "losers" when they are forced to withdraw from Iraq because the cost is too high and we've run out of troops to send there. All in all a huge blunder on Bush-Cheney's part, plus they lied about it, so they're in double trouble. But we're the ones who really pay.
