I have long thought that buying a block of Russian launchers, Soyuz for manned, Proton for heavy lift, made much more economic sense

From what I've read, we're pretty much turning the Shuttle hardware into our next "Saturn V". Put the payload on top, the shuttle boosters underneath the tank, and voila, the world's biggest heavy lift rocket. Wasn't that easy? <g>
