It seemed to be the style of the era, because Waco and Elian Gonzales followed suit before the rascals were voted out.

IIRC, Weaver did some illegal trading in weapons, while David K. found interesting uses for the 13 year old daughters of his followers. Korish at least well deserved to rot in jail IMO.
