I agree that behind the scenes, reality is different. However, there are some reality checks.

1) Rummy & Bush and others did not expect the insurgency we got. It is pretty clear they were blindsided by the post war developments. I recall one administration figure booted for saying the adventures might well total $200B, various generals maligned for saying more troops would be needed, etc. I remember "Mission Accomplished", and "Bring it on!" and other similarly stupid statements.

2) The shifting statements now are for consumption of the US voting public, so they can start adjusting their POV to reality. There will be additional statements about democracy and the plight of females and secular Iraqi's and about Iraq-Iran improving relations, all with an eye towards claiming victory despite things somehow not ending the way they were supposed to.
