It depends on the particular Protestant denomination's eschatology. Even within a given denomination, there is most likely some variance on the issue, and of course how literally a given believer believes the tenants of his faith is another issue.

But: Evangelical's as a group tend to hold to an eschatology that requires Jews to be in control of Israel, along with a real war of titanic proportions to be fought there prior to the end of the earth. Most of these Christians think that we are literally living in the final days of the Earth and that these events are going to happen shortly, if not already started. Read the book of Revelation in the Bible, which will give you some idea of the possibilities, as well as it should help you understand why there are so many different eschatologies.

People who hold these views are certainly a political factor in the USA's support for Israel, and hence, IMO have a direct impact on both Islamic terror directed at us as well as our response. The numbers kicked around are about 24-26M voted in the last election, with around 80-90% going for Bush?? You can Google to dredge up more detailed info.
