I think you might over exaggerate the ethnic diversity in India and underexaggerate that in China. Linguistically there probably is about the same diversity in fact two main language groups, a national language Hindi taking the role of Putonghua and most importantly English. All universities teach in English and all educated people speak English. On the other hand, India does have some problems... and some other advantages over China.

Will be interesting to see how things develop in the next couple of decades.
