I wonder if autism is becoming more common, and if so, why.

It is discussed more, and diagnosed more. Difficult to tell if it has really increased. It could have a chemical imbalance factor that is increasing it. A lot of people want to blame everything on trace chemicals or mercury from vaccinations.
