re: I personally believe that Clinton's Nafta was one of his finest accomplishments. One of his few as a matter of fact.

Shrinking government growth, balancing the budget are not important to the new conservatives. But to us old conservatives, it was quite an accomplishment. I suppose it will be recognized in it's own time.

re: Who started it? He certainly closed it though if my memory serves me well.

He certainly did. My recollection is that NAFTA had been sleeping in the wings and Clinton took the bull by the horns. Clinton and Newt's Republican congress really accomplished a lot, welfare reform was another one.

But the Republicans, with their pandering to special interests, have destroyed any hope for pragmatic solutions going forward. It's an effective political tactic, and makes the Democrats respond in kind, but does nothing for the country.

I'm not sure we'll ever get back to non-partisan solutions. Clinton/Newt may have been the end of compromise.
