I was on a jury that convicted a person of something I thought shouldn't be illegal.

That's what jury nullification is for. If a law is bad, then a jury has every right to nullify. I got dismissed from jury duty for just such a case. The guy, who was slightly over 18, was charged with statutory (consensual) rape of a little slut who was slightly under 18. She had actually instigated the affair and only turned against him after her mother caught them together. Sure, he was guilty of breaking that law (BTW, he was black and she was white) but there was no way that I would have voted to convict him of the charge. I told the judge where I was coming from along these lines and was dismissed from the jury.

Of course he was found guilty and had to register as a sex offender.
