The only real value to having cameras everywhere in public is to identify killers like the terrorists in London.

There is a current murder case in Washington where the murderer was clearly seen by a security camera. One of the problems with convicting murderers in Washington is the increasing unwillingness of people to testify. Seems to me that security cameras are a good counter to that. Film doesn't fear. And if the cameras can work for lesser crimes, too, making it cost effective to prosecute them, all the better.
