Phil > Iran has been in the US gunsights for many years
Without any doubt -- ever since the Shah was deposed.
> if Iran persists in her nuclear ambition, the US will attack in my opinion
Iran has stated over and over that it is not instituting an enrichment program. All nuclear waste will be sent to Russia for processing. In the circumstances, it is clear, to me anyway, that Iran's nuclear endeavours are for peaceful purposes only. Of course, that will not satisfy Israel or the hawks in the US who will be shouting for war at the mere mention of the word "nuclear". My opinion that there will not be war is, however, based on my assessment on what the US is doing at the moment, not on what it, or Israel, is saying. And I get the distinct feeling that the US has had enough.

>>Washington is now less concerned about the insurgents than the unwillingness of Iraq's politicians to make compromises for the sake of national unity. Pentagon planners want to send a spine-stiffening message: the Americans won't be there forever. U.S. domestic factors are also forcing President Bush's hand. The Bush administration wants to pre-empt growing public pressure for withdrawal<<
> If Iran develops nuclear weapons, Iran can not only threaten Israel, but also put enormous pressure on Arab states
I see no reason why Iran would want to threaten Israel except for the Palestinian issue and the solution to that is not military but political. All talk about Iran's warlike intentions comes from Israel and the hawks in Washington.
> Think of the fear if Iran were to announce it possessed the atomic bomb, and maybe exploded a few to demonstrate it
There are many countries in the world which have atomic bombs including India, Pakistan and N. Korea. In fact, SA had some and destroyed them, also the capability to make them. I don't think anyone loses sleep because of all this. But with Israel anything that any Arab/Muslim country does is a provocation even, as you say, just to have what they have. |
