Well, there is Sufism, which I've always thought was pretty cool. The below article is a reasonably accurate depiction of Sufisim, which also mentions neo-Platonist influences on Islam in the Middle Ages, which had an ameliorating influence on fundamentalist Islam, as it did on Medieval Christianity.

When we read the bits in the Old Testament where they say "kill witches, kill homosexuals, kill adulterers", we say, "oh, well, we've outgrown all that." Same thing can happen with Islam, it just doesn't seem to have become as widespread as we'd like.
