"Republican Sen. George Voinovich (news, bio, voting record) of Ohio also said he was disappointed.

"I am truly concerned that a recess appointment will only add to John Bolton's baggage and his lack of credibility with the United Nations," Voinovich said."

Whether one likes Bolton or not, taking office with this kind of mandate is going to make his life tough. He won't get the kind of honeymoon most people get in a new position and if he makes a misstep or flares up at all (even if such a reaction might be considered reasonable under normal circumstances), it will be trumpeted.

Worst of all, he will be set up to fail at the UN by those within that organization that don't like the U.S. or President Bush. They can claim anything about Bolton which, true or not, will make his time there tougher than it should be.

I wonder why the guy wants the job under these circumstances.
