Hi Rick,
Yes, Synercid looks very promising. I still don't understand why
the drug isn't approved - they finished Phase III nearly a year ago.
I think the drug is being used on a compassionate use basis right
now. Also, resistance to Synercid has already been observed so I would
doubt that this will be a Superdrug for very long.

I like PNU's oxazolidinones. It is thought that the drug blocks
the interaction between mRNA and tRNA. If so, this would block protein
synthesis earlier than, say, macrolides which bind to the ribosomes.
This fact, combined with the fact that the compounds are quite novel,
suggests that resistance could take much longer to develop. Targeting
the gene level (as indicated in the abstracts you sent) would be even
better. However, I thought that the signal transduction program at
MCDE was very low priority. My impression was that they are providing
the biology but that it was really Ortho's project. I could be
wrong.

I think these new drugs serve to fuel interest in this area and will
be beneficial to MCDE (and others). Furthermore, I have heard that
the FDA is actually considering incentives for development of
novel antibiotics on top of expedited review. They are also
considering Orphan status for old antibiotics that may not be
eligible for patent protection.

This should be a hot area over the next few years and I truly
feel that MCDE is well-positioned to take full advantage of
these emerging trends. I have yet to find a pure-play that looks
as promising as MCDE.

John
