German engineers have developed a superior alternative to the heat protection tiles of the space shuttle. It's a material which has already been tested in space; the rescue shuttle of the ISS uses it, for instance. The institute submitted its material to the NASA but I guess the space shuttle management suffers from the NIH (not invented here) syndrome.
