Airport Screener Accused Of Peddling Child Porn

August 2, 2005

By Liz Rocca

SEATTLE - A Department of Homeland Security employee is behind bars Tuesday, accused of peddling child porn.

Detectives with a special Seattle Police Department task force tell us the suspect was giving away graphic movies of child rape on the Internet.

55-year-old Ronald McNeill just had his first court appearance inside the King County Jail Tuesday afternoon, where his bail was set at $50,000.

Detectives say he's never run afoul of the law -- not even a traffic ticket -- until now.

But Detective Trent Bergmann with Seattle Police's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force says he began tracking McNeill's internet activities in early June.

Bergmann discovered the suspect posted several graphic child porn movies on a Web site for anyone to see and download for free.

"It involved a female that was prepubescent, approximately 6 years old, in a sex act with an adult male," Det. Bergmann said.

The task force raided McNeill's Des Moines apartment Monday. Investigators say they found hundreds of 5 minute, kiddie porn movies on McNeill's computer.

"There were titles to the images that would lead me to believe they were of minors, I'd say probably around 500 movies," Bergmann said.

The Transportation Security Administration confirms the 55-year-old McNeill is an airport passenger screener at Sea-Tac Airport. An agent from the Homeland Security Department helped arrest him at his post Monday.

When questioned, investigators say the McNeill "admitted that he had pictures/movies of child pornography on his home computer..." and "..shared them with other people on the Internet."

Task force detectives say the arrest is the result of months of tedious work. And they have a warning for child predators lurking on the Web: police will be watching.

"They forget that whatever you do on the Internet is not secret it can easily be traced," Bergmann said. "There's a secret veil there that they think they're safe behind."

TSA says the screener has worked for them since September 2001. The agency has suspended him without pay while the criminal case is sorted out.
