"It sounds like you're being fair, but creationism is a sectarian religious viewpoint, and intelligent design is a sectarian religious viewpoint," said Susan Spath, a spokeswoman for the National Center for Science Education, a group that defends the teaching of evolution in public schools. "It's not fair to privilege one religious viewpoint by calling it the other side of evolution."

Exactly, and therein lies the rub.

This is one of the hidden aspects of the "America is a Judeo-Christian country" agenda. Teach creationism because it's a popular belief among certain Protestants. Who, by the way, also argue that if you don't believe in their version of creationism, you're a Godless atheist.

The argument that ideas should be given scientific weight based on popularity with the general public is a silly one -- then why don't we teach astrology, palm reading, and that little green men from outer space take lonely overweight women into outer space and have sex with them? These are all popular beliefs among the general public.
