Hi Michael,

The last thing they should do is go down the "attack the religious voter" road

I had lunch today with my mother-in-law who is 81 and loves politics. She is a registered Republican and has never voted Democrat, and she's a Christian. It was a shock to hear her say that she believed Bush was totally out of line with that comment, and that several things he has done have convinced her he borders on fanaticism and crosses the line between church and state.

There are many conservatives who, while religious, aren't going to be thrilled with this confused merger of the metaphysical and the scientific in the classroom. So as you said, regardless of one's beliefs, it's a road to losing campaigns in many areas of the country-- only in this case, it's not exactly the way you meant it! I do agree that the Dems would be smart to not attack. If they would do this and and offer mature, rational, reasonable, alternatives- there are a lot of disillusioned conservatives there for the taking.
