I recently flew with two sailors who had been on a carrier off Iraq. When I tried to bring up politics they looked at me without expression. They had no opinion whatsoever. They didn't even seem to care. They just did their jobs, kicked ass, then kicked back and partied on R+R.

Not all are so oblivious but I can assure you not that many are ardent Bush supporters, certainly a lot less are now than were two years ago. The war after all is FUBAR and they know it.

However the volunteer military does attract a lot of rural conservative types, as well as many blacks and Hispanics so there's no norm anymore. Lifers tend to be conservative but also apolitical. They serve any commander.
