I admit to being a sucker for magical realism myself.

It's a "hard to define" subject. The term was originally coined to describe some novels by Spanish authors. The difference between it and "Fantasy" is that it is not "what if?"

It postulates the real world with a different "real world" in it. My favorite movie using this technique is Ellen Burstyn's Resurrection. Get the DVD if you have missed it. The most recent was the HBO series called, Carnivàle.
