I don't doubt democracy will come to the middle east but it may not look anything like what we expect a democracy should look like.

I don't get your meaning. A democracy basically means the people elect their leadership, and the leadership makes the rules that the people follow. Repeat every 4-6 years.

If you mean the rules that they choose to live by might not be anything what we would expect, I agree it may not look like what the non-Muslim world has chosen. But anywhere that has free elections every, say, 5 years or so (not controlled elections like in Egypt or elections between pre-selected candidates like in Iran, but really free elections, like in, I don't know, La La land!) then progress is going to occur.

There would be nothing wrong with Iran today if the mullahs weren't more powerful than the elected officials, and the mullahs didn't get to prohibit any candidates that are opposed to the mullahs. I'll bet if the mullahs were removed from the equation the Iranians would elect a government that wants to be friendly with the USA. The Iranian people that I know here say most Iranians really like America, but they are 30 years old and not politically powerful, so the 70 year old Ayatollah gets to maintain his power and deny the majority what they want (in the name of Islam).
