Isn't it better to do something rather than give in to despair or cynicism and do nothing?

My reply to that assumedly rhetorical question is, succinctly, that it depends upon how "something" is accomplished.

Does this "do[ing] something" contemplate voluntary, charitable acts, or state coercion?
