Well, I don't want to debate the merits of any religion as the "true" or "false" religion.

I am willing to concede that all religions, Buddhism included, have elements within them that come from culture of the time and were further modified through out history according to societal needs.

That said, one can also postulate that an intelligent God or Universe, also puts within us the "need" or "instinct" to move in the "right" direction. So whether or not a belief is due to innate human need rather than "Word of God" is not a refutation of God any more than the "Word of God" is a proof of his existence.
