Ted, Why does it have to be an either or proposition? Why can't the state cater to the unions while representing the interests of the people? After all, if the teachers are happy, presumably they will do a good job which will, in turn, benefit the children of "the people". I am very interested in "win-win" scenarios. More tax dollars directly to the teachers is a good thing. More tax dollars directly to the good teachers is an even better thing. More tax dollars to support pension programs that only benefit the unions is a bad thing. Yes, I realize that unions are not inherently evil, but I also realize that the unions' interests are inherently one-sided. That's why the state and local governments must represent the interests of the other side so that we can get to the "win-win" scenarios that make everyone happy. Tenchusatsu
