I'm not aware that any of the folks mentioned are trying to use the club of the state to compel anything They are trying to force science teachers to teach what they would not in any kind of seriousness choose to teach in a science class, through the mechanism of the state. ID can't win the battle of ideas within the scientific community to be taken serious enough to be offered as a viable "alternative", so they choose to force the teaching of their religious doctrine using "the club of the state". This was a point the US Supreme Court made in Edwards v. Aguillard, as well. The justices virtually laughed the "protecting academic freedom" justification right out of court.
