Oh, for criyi. How many illegal alien babies are preemies that need $300,000 in neonatal intensive care?

Can't you tell when your hot buttons are being pushed?

If medical expenses are your hot buttons, get rid of EMTALA, the law that forces hospitals to treat everybody, regardless of status, regardless of ability to pay, if they present at the emergency room as an emergency.

Otherwise, regardless of how illegal it is to come into the country without going through INS, hospitals can't exclude anybody, illegal or not.

There's no special break for illegal aliens.

I should point out that EMTALA is the safety net for anybody who doesn't have health insurance, and if you get rid of EMTALA you're throwing people to the wolves, but hey, it's public policy in a democracy, we all have a say.
