I had no real relationship with my father once my evil stepmother came into our lives when I was a young teenager. I was never alone with him after that, and so the relationship was perfunctory at best. I think there is a lot of rich and essential stuff that goes on in relationships with parents once the child reaches adulthood, so that was a real sadness. There were never any nightmares, though, and no substance abuse, so I didn't really see signs of war trauma coming from him. My grandfather, stuck in the trenches of France in World War I, told me plenty of war stories, though. For him, being in the war defined him much more than it did my father.
