Is this a statistical reply or gut feel? Where's the data supporting your statement?

The registry I don't see what problem that solves since guns aren't purchased by criminals, they get them from family, friends or they steal them.

You may have answered your own question. If a registered gun is used to commit a crime, the registry provides a lead to the original owner.
