Not only is it not unique to the Times but, for good, intelligent reporters, it's almost impossible to separate the two. That's why I don't see what Keller is saying. If you, for instance, take as a model, John Burns' reporting from Iraq. Burns is one of the best reporters of our times and of The Times. There is not an article from him that is not a welcome mix of commentary and coverage.

Only news organizations like the AP in which reporters become cyphers is there an absence of commentary (save for its inevitability in any speech act). And no one buys the AP to understand what's happening.
